I went to my favourite mamak stall tonight at the Medan Selera of SS2/60, Petaling Jaya, expecting to be greeted by a warm friendly, "Apa khabar kawan.....kenapa lama tak datang?" of an old friend, Misai, the mamak drinks stall owner, but sadly that was not to be tonight.
I was informed by his son, Mohd, that his father had passed away on the 3rd January this year from a heart attack at the age of 60. I was shocked as i have always remembered him to be a friendly man who would pull a chair beside and sit down with his customers, engaging in friendly banter.
I have been coming to his stall for many years now, and his absence is deeply felt as i couldn't remember a time when i wasn't greeted by his friendly manner. He was also very generous with his customers as he would always shave off charges & round it up to the nearest dollar.
I have always found it remarkable how good his PR was and have always admired him for the deep pride and joy he displayed in what he does, which was evident in the way he handled his customers, even if it's just running a stall.
He was not an elder statesman or a VIP, but his warm, affable & friendly manner, has warmed and left an indelible mark in the hearts of his patrons whom i'm sure would miss him and would always remember him fondly.
It is true that a man's measure is not judged by his achievements alone but by how he's remembered by friends and loved ones alike. God Bless You, Misai.
