Emerald Hill, a Peranakan Heritage in Singapore.

Stumbled onto Emerald Hill Road when i was on a stroll down Orchard Road during X'mas. I wouldn't have thought that staid impersonal Singapore still has old world charm that this quiet road exudes with its classic Peranakan architecture, where it was home to Singapore's wealthy peranakans (straits born chinese). Much of the old shophouses have been turned into chic cafes and pubs which spills out seamlessly to the alfresco promenades that are tree lined. You would see a lot of conservation work going on as some of the old houses are restored. The shops are absolutely charming with its wide eaves, intricate woodworking and its garish splashes of bold colours.

May I ask it is a government attempt to redesign these houses?
Have these houses been officially conserved? Thanks a lot.
